Background of the Study

Adolescent substance abuse is a growing concern worldwide, as it poses significant risks to both physical and mental health. Adolescents are particularly vulnerable to substance use due to developmental changes, peer pressure, and emotional stressors, which may lead to early experimentation with drugs and alcohol (Sadiq et al., 2023). In Nigeria, the prevalence of substance abuse among adolescents has increased in recent years, with many young individuals using substances such as alcohol, marijuana, and prescription drugs for recreational purposes (Abubakar & Yusuf, 2024). In Taraba State, a region in northeastern Nigeria, the problem of adolescent substance abuse is compounded by limited mental health awareness and scarce mental health services (Akinbode et al., 2023).

Substance abuse during adolescence can have long-term consequences for mental health, including the development of anxiety, depression, mood disorders, and in extreme cases, psychosis (Ogunwale & Bamidele, 2024). In Taraba State, where mental health issues are often stigmatized and not openly discussed, many adolescents with substance abuse problems may not seek professional help, leading to undiagnosed and untreated mental health conditions (Zubairu et al., 2023). This lack of treatment can result in the escalation of mental health issues, further exacerbating the impact of substance abuse on their overall well-being.

This study aims to examine the effect of adolescent substance abuse on mental health in Taraba State, focusing on the psychological consequences of substance use among young individuals. The findings of the study will provide insights into the mental health challenges faced by adolescents with substance abuse problems and help inform prevention and intervention strategies for mental health and substance abuse issues in the region.

Statement of the Problem

Adolescent substance abuse is a significant public health issue in Taraba State, with many young individuals engaging in substance use as a coping mechanism for stress, peer pressure, and environmental challenges. However, the psychological effects of substance abuse, including anxiety, depression, and other mental health disorders, remain poorly understood in the state. Given the stigma surrounding mental health and the lack of mental health resources, many adolescents may suffer in silence, leading to severe long-term consequences. This study aims to explore the relationship between adolescent substance abuse and mental health, providing a better understanding of how substance abuse impacts mental health outcomes in Taraba State.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the prevalence of substance abuse among adolescents in Taraba State.

2. To evaluate the psychological effects of substance abuse on adolescents in Taraba State.

3. To identify the risk factors and underlying causes of substance abuse among adolescents in Taraba State.

Research Questions

1. What is the prevalence of substance abuse among adolescents in Taraba State?

2. How does adolescent substance abuse affect mental health outcomes in Taraba State?

3. What are the risk factors and causes of substance abuse among adolescents in Taraba State?

Research Hypotheses

1. Adolescent substance abuse is positively associated with an increased risk of mental health disorders in Taraba State.

2. Adolescents who engage in substance abuse have higher levels of anxiety and depression compared to those who do not abuse substances.

3. Peer pressure and socio-economic stressors are significant risk factors for adolescent substance abuse in Taraba State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on adolescents aged 12-19 years in Taraba State and will assess the prevalence of substance abuse and its impact on mental health. Data will be collected through surveys, interviews, and psychological assessments. Limitations include potential biases in self-reporting and challenges in accessing vulnerable populations due to the sensitive nature of the topic.
